Tips for Crocheting Dolls

The first tip for crocheting amazing dolls is to use a much smaller size hook than you are used to for the size yarn. For example, I made my Morgan doll (seen above) with a DK yarn that calls for a size G hook, but I sized down to a D hook to get the stitches nice and tight. You don't want any stuffing showing through!

The next tip is to learn to use and love the magic circle technique. This lets you start a round without having a noticeable hole like you would if you used a slip knot and chains. It took me a while to get the hang of this one, but now I use and love it and I have had a lot of people comment that my tutorial has helped them learn how to get the hang of it, too!

Finally, use stitch markers to keep track of where you are because you will work most of these patterns in continuous rounds. It gets really hard to tell where you are when all the stitches look the same! Plus it can be hard to count the rounds when you don't know where the round ends, so do yourself a favor and somehow mark the first stitch of the round.

What are the Best Yarns for Crochet Dolls?

A lot of people love acrylic yarns such as Vanna's Choice for dolls, and it is a great worsted weight yarn to use. The most important thing is getting the color for the skin tone you like, as many yarn lines don't have a great array of skin tones.

I used Lion Brand Coboo for my Morgan doll and have purchased two different skin tones in the same yarn line for some upcoming dolls. There are three that I like for skin tones: Tan, Beige and Taupe.

Once you get the body of the doll down the hair, clothes and accessories can be made from anything you like – even fabric for clothes or non-yarn hair! The choices are endless.
